Family Support Worker, NCAFPS

Mandate/Mission

The vision of the North Cariboo Aboriginal Family Program Society is:
Aboriginal families and communities in the North Cariboo will be healthy in mind, body and spirit, with a significantly reduced need for professional services. They will have successful responsibility for their own well-being.

The primary role of the Family Support Worker is to work with the people of the Aboriginal community to promote and implement this vision, promoting the health and development of each child, youth and family.

Procedure:Three Family Support Workers serve the three local bands in the North Cariboo: Lhatako, Lhoosk’uz and Nazko. Family Support Workers can be contacted through their band offices. Lhoosk'uz FSW can also be contacted through the NCAFPS.

Services


  • provide services, support and training directed at children, youth and their families who may be at risk of personal and family disruption due to issues such as health, justice, mental health and child protection concerns
  • work in close cooperation with the MCFD staff regarding any child who may be in need of protection, participating to the fullest extent in any child abuse investigation
  • provide counseling, support services and referrals for individual children, youth and families
  • identify and develop community resources that may be available to alleviate child protection concerns
  • identify, regularly contact and provide liaison and communication with and for Aboriginal children-in-care
  • encourage and facilitate the interaction of elders and youth
  • promote the healthy development of youth by providing information, activities & support
